REAL CULPRITS WHO SHOULD BE ON TRIAL
Who is really responsible for our national tragedy?
Donald Trump is on trial for falsifying documents to gain a financial advantage for himself. He is under indictment elsewhere for illegally stealing government documents and for threatening a violent insurrection in Washington. There is little doubt that he deserves the situation in which he has put himself. But it is a large number of the American people who in 2016, knowing what a bad dude he is, elected him as President, enabling him to commit these crimes. It wasn’t a majority of the American people. (In fact, nearly three million more people voted for Hillary Clinton than voted for Trump). But, because of the skewed way in which we elect the President, Trump won a majority of the Electoral College votes. Sixty-three million Americans voted for Trump. Knowing what kind of a man he is when they voted, these voters are as responsible as he is for his corrupt actions. They should be on trial as well.
Not paying attention or overlooking Trump’s malfeasance in office, in 2020, Trump garnered even more popular votes: seventy-four million popular votes (Eighty-one million people voted for Biden) but an insufficient number of Electoral College votes. Nonetheless, more people voted for Trump than they did in 2016, despite the fact that he had been impeached twice by the House of Representatives for substantive misadventures, including trying to overthrow the 2020 election, despite his unfulfilled promises (like supporting infrastructure legislation to create millions of jobs), despite his endorsement of wrong-headed and nefarious pandemic policies and procedures, despite his entanglements with the dictators of hostile countries and his strained relations with longtime allies. What Trump has done is to hoodwink his supporters by soliciting financial contributions for campaign expenses that he then spends to cover his legal fees and other personal expenses. All along, from the first outbreak of the Covid pandemic through until the present, Trump has beguiled his followers who, though they may be regarded as “suckers”, are just as guilty of perpetrating a national disgrace as he is. Americans should be honest and responsible for others and for their country – and not be out playing golf when they need to pay attention and be involved.
